Despite its name, the Hawaiian palm (Brighamia insignis) is not a palm tree. It belongs to the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) and is actually a succulent. It is also known as the volcano palm. Originally from Hawaii, it grows in rock crevices and on basalt cliffs near the sea. Unfortunately, its natural population is declining, making this highly decorative houseplant difficult to find. The Hawaiian palm enters a dormant phase during the summer, during which it sheds its leaves.
